Which Parakeet Makes the Ideal Pet?

Before you get a parakeet or any other pet for that matter, it is best to learn as much about their habits as possible. This will give you a better idea of how much you want a pet and whether you can cope with it. Remember that keeping a pet is like having a baby in the house which is not going to grow up and will remain like a toddler always. You will have to cope with looking after it, feeding it, cleaning it and also training it. Only if you are capable of doing all this should you take on a pet as it is not fait to the pet or to you otherwise. Parrots come in different species and sizes and you will have to think about the size of the bird you want or whether you prefer to have several of them and pick only the small type like love birds.

Bigger birds like macaws will need a different kind of looking after and the cage will also occupy a lot more space. Remember that big birds have to be let free for at least a few minutes a day so that they can exercise. The smaller ones can move around in their own cage and even fly around a bit inside it. Do you have the time and patience and even the space for a larger bird. Often people prefer keeping two as they do not want one to get lonely. Most pet owners keep pets in pairs so that they can keep each other company.

So get to know the different species of parakeets which are available in the pet shop before you decide on the kind you would like to have as a pet. The pet shop will be able to give you a clear picture on the type of parrot which makes a good pet and which you can handle too. Maintenance is the main criteria in keeping a pet and you have to be able to give it the attention and care which it needs. If you are unable to care for a pet then it is better not to keep one.

You can do an online research on parrots and the kind of environment which each species requires to choose the type you would want as a pet. The parrots which are generally kept as house hold pets are the Poicephalus, Pionus, Caciques, African greys, Amazons, macaws, buggies, lovebirds, cockatiels, conures and cockatoos. These species like all other parrots eat the same kind of food which is also quite common to what humans eat too. You can procure their food from any pet shop and if one is not available the choice is pretty wide you can get another kind to feed your parrot on.
