Various Kinds of Parakeets
Parrots or parakeets are beautiful and intelligent birds which are
found all over the globe. These birds come in various shapes, sizes and
colors and are of many different types. Different species of parrots
inhabit different parts of the globe but they all have very similar
habits. Their life span is long and they can be trained to become
interesting and lively pets and can keep you good company once they
become your pet. If you have a parrot as a pet you will not face
loneliness as this bird will keep you amused and occupied. You can
decide on the type of parrot you want to keep at home after learning
more about the various types. What you will have to think about mainly
is the size of the parrot before you take on one as a pet.
Different types of parrots
There are several species of parrots and many are found in South
America, Africa and Southern Asia. Parrots and parakeets are from the
same family and differ only in size and color. The Poicephalus Parrots
is a medium sized parrot and is originally from Africa. The Yell Faced
parrot and Red-bellied Meyer’s is also from this group. Parakeets which
are most often found in pet stores are brightly colored, very small in
size and have chirpy voices. You get them in white, violet, pale blue,
yellow and dark green. These make attractive pets and people often keep
them in ornamental cages. They are originally from the south eastern
parts of Asia.
Another very attractive bird of the parakeet family is the Cockatoo.
This bird is recognized by its crested feather on the head. The Cockatoo
hails from Australia and also North West parts of Asia. It has a bill
which is hooked and powerful with a tongue that is very animal like
being thick and fleshy. The legs are stocky and strong. Parrots that
make good pets and are intelligent, playful and active are the Caciques.
Most parrots are known for their intelligence and their ability to
learn and be trained fast. The Amazon is another such one of the parrot
species. These green parrots are mostly from the Caribbean region. More
vibrant in color and looks is the Cockatiel which is gray in color. The
male adult has some black feathers under its tail and its head is
yellow. The female has similar colors but in lighter shades. This
species of parrot comes in several other colors too and each one is more
beautiful than the other.
 Among the larger parrots are the Macaws which are from the tropic of
America. These birds can be the size of a pigeon to over three feet
long. This is a beautiful colored bird with the tail and the beak being
large. It has the colors of a rainbow and is often referred to as the
winged rainbow.
Among the species of parrots which make good pets is the Parrotlets.
It is a friendly natured bird with a high level of activity which makes
it a great pet. Another bird of this species which makes a great pet is
the Conures. This is a peaceful bird with a friendly disposition and an
interactive personality. They love playing and have loud call which is
very distinct. Love birds are always in pairs and that is how they
derive their name. Small in size they are colorful and make ornamental
pets in homes or in the garden in large cages.
