The Right Diet for a Parakeet
Parakeets make wonderful pets and have a long life span. These birds
are very active and acrobatic and keep at it most of the time even in
captivity. This is one reason why their diet has to be well taken care
of and balanced. They like a diet which has variety and do not want to
eat the same food everyday. Vegetables, nuts, seeds, fruit make their
diet. The parakeet loves nibbling at fruit and is especially fond of
pears, apples and bananas. If it sees its owner eating any fruit it
would want a share of it too. Just place a bit of the fruit in its cages
and it will be at it.
To get closer to your pet parakeet try hand feeding it and also sit
next to it and share your fruit with it. This makes the pet trust you
more and it will soon be perched on your shoulder. Parakeets love
bathing and nibbling at the same time and you can offer it a piece of
apple or whatever while is splashing in its bath. Though the parakeet
loves greens and many of the vegetables it is better to be careful as
some of these can upset the parrot’s liver.
The diet has to be monitored well as this is what will finally decide
on your parakeet’s health. If you want your pet to live a long and happy
life ensure that the diet is what the vet recommends. If you want to
breed parakeets then the diet has to be special during the breeding
period. You should put a piece of cuttlebone and a mineral block in its
cage so that it can nibble on it and get the required nourishment. A
good diet will give you healthy chicks. Parakeets enjoy some extravagant
foods like beans, sesame seeds, tofu, almonds and lentils too. They
enjoy a change in their diet and this keeps them interested in their
food too. They would be bored if you gave them the same food everyday.

A parakeet is an intelligent animal and this means it want to be
entertained and have an exciting lifestyle. This applies to both their
activity as well as their diet. You have to make sure that both are
stimulated so that your pet is a happy pet and does not feel neglected
and bored. Apart from the right diet you should also keep its cage clean
and allow it a bit of exercise by letting it fly around within the home
for a while. Put some toys into the cage so that it can keep itself
amused. What parakeets love is a swing in the cage which they will sit
on for hours. Another favorite with them is a mirror as they love
looking at themselves in it. The cage should be large enough to give it
room to move around within the cage too. Safeguard it from predators
like stray cats coming into the house.
