How to Teach Your Pet Parakeet to Talk

To own a talking parrot is to have a wonderful pet. Imagine when you are on your own with just your pet parrot you can carry on a conversation of sorts with it and never feel lonely. To teach a parrot how to talk you will have to get it when it is around two months old. It is only when the parrot is very young that it will start bonding with its owner and only after this bond is developed can you train it to talk. Just like a baby listens to the adults and starts talking your baby parrot will do the same. You will have to have patience and sit down with it for long periods and repeat words which you want it to learn. By the time your parrot is around 4 months old it will be able to mimic the words you have been repeating to it.

Once the parrot is 4 months old it will start picking up words faster and this is the best period to teach it new words and increase its vocabulary. This is possible until the parrot is a year old but after that it is not easy to teach it new words. It is during this period that you can train your parrot, discipline it and also teach it a few tricks. So the main thing is to try and get a very young bird so that you can teach it a few things including talking which makes it a wonderful pet to have around you.

Training male parrots to talk is much easier that training a female one. However, it may not be easy to find out which a male is and which is a female. Only a vet will be able to help you with this. The best part of the day to teach your parrot to talk is during the early morning hours or during late evenings. When birds are in the wild this is the time when they make the most noise and get together to eat or to make squawking sounds at each other. When you are training your parrot to talk ensure that there is no other disturbance around and that there are no other sounds like music or television in the vicinity. Silence should be around you and only your voice should be heard. This will make the parrot concentrate on the sound of your voice and imitate it. Once it does attempt to make the same sound then it should be rewarded with a tit bit. Most animals do respond positively if they are rewarded and will perform better.

Once the parrot realizes that there is a reward coming with the talk session it will try harder to mimic the sounds of your words and will look forward to and enjoy these training periods. Say the word slowly and clearly and give your parrot time to repeat it. Do not be hasty or impatient with your pet. If you use actions with the words like wagging your hands about the parrot will also try to imitate this. Once it learns the first word then the others fall into place much faster and it can be great fun to teach them.
