All You Wanted to Know About Parakeets
Parakeets are commonly known as parrots. Parrots are of several
different types and each one is unique in its coloring and size and
though they are all over the world, each part of the globe has different
parakeets. South America alone has 27 species of parakeets. If you are
planning on keeping one of these species as a pet you should learn about
their behavior and how to train and domesticate them. They are
intelligent creatures and apart from being ornamental in their
appearance are quick to learn. Once you get a parrot you should first
work at house training it so that you do not have problems with a bird
in the house.
How to keep a parrot happy A parrot is
exceptionally intelligent when compared to other creatures and needs a
simulative environment to keep it busy and happy. It has to be amused
and have something of interest happening around it or can become quite
destructive and uncontrollable with loud squawks to show its
displeasure. So the best way to keep him happy is to show him how he
should behave and train him. He will pick up “good manners” and abide by
them as he is intelligent enough to know what his owners want of him.
How to train your parrot They learn fast and this makes it easy
to train them. Begin with tricks that are simple and easy to obey. The
“step up” trick is the first one which they can pick up. For this you
should place your finger near the lower abdomen and rub it gently and
urge the bird to step up onto your finger. He will do it because of the
action and once you repeat this a few times will get to understand what
it is you are trying to tell him. After this you can slowly get him to
do a few more complicated things and continue in this way with his
training. Show him his food, his water and also where he should do his
jobs so that he can also be toilet trained in the cage itself. If he
knows which corner his toilet is in he will invariably start using it.
Take care of the parrots needs
Find out from the pet shop
what the diet should consist of and feed your pet parrot only what is
recommended. Parrots are known to eat fruits and a few vegetables too
and can digest all this fairly well. Avoid new foods which are not in
the list of his feeds as this may cause severe stomach infections and it
is not easy to treat a parrot once it gets sick. Your pet will need a
bit of exercise and this means flying around the house for at least 15
minutes in a day. Ensure that the parrot does not go out of the house
and allow him to be free for a while inside and fly around. He will
begin to understand this procedure and will get back to his cage after
his jaunt is over on his own. A parrot needs company Apart
from feeding him and taking care of his nutrition a parrot also needs
company and wants affection. Spend quality time with your pet talking to
him and playing with him and he will be a happy parrot. A few toys like
swings and mirrors placed in his cage will also keep him amused. A pet
is like a child and you have to nurture and protect it for it to be
healthy and happy.
